How to Play Corners Rules: The game is similar to Chinese Checkers but chess board is used instead of one used in Chinese Cehckers. Each player uses a different colored set of pieces and places them into a opposite corners on board. The idea of the game is to manipulate pieces of your color on board to occupy the opposite board corner. All pieces stay on playing board. The player getting all pieces across first wins. One can move or jump in any direction as long as one follows the lines. As in checkers, move only one hole or jump only one piece;although successive jumps are permissible wherever they can be made in any direction. You play blue pieces, while computer plays grey. When you start the Corners computer automatically makes a move. To move the piece, select it by left click and then left click on square when you want to move it. Arrows on figure show example of permitted moves. To start a new game select Game->New game from menu. You can undo your last move by selecting Game->undo move, you can undo all the moves you made. Installation: Download. Extract all files in any folder. Corners comes in one file, while NetCorners comes in 24 files. The Corners needs to have MFC dll's installed. Most likely you already have these DLL's. But if you don't, you can download them from my archive. Hysterical paralysis

 Hysterical neurosis belongs to the group of psychogenic functional diseases.  A hallmark of hysteria is the occurrence of specific attacks - affective manifestations of the disease.  Since ancient times, it has been believed that pathology is characteristic of women, who in this way subconsciously try to attract the attention of others.  However, statistics say that all people are equally subject to the influence of hysteria.

 In the onset of this disease, the type of personality is more important than ever.  Extroverts, emotionally unrestrained, temperamental and suggestible people are at risk for the development of neurosis.  Also, a role in the etiology is played by burdened heredity, severe somatic diseases, trauma, and a dysfunctional family.  Often a seizure occurs after a stressful influence, for example, an experience at work or a conflict in the family.  It has been proven that an attack almost never occurs suddenly and in the absence of "spectators".  Subconsciously, the patient moves away from reality for his own personal gain.

 The symptoms of the disease are rather nonspecific, since patients use all possible means to attract attention.  They often dress brightly and behave defiantly, try to be in the center of the company, loudly talk about their achievements.  At the same time, high spirits can be abruptly replaced by crying and irritability.  Such mood swings are accompanied by a headache, interruptions in the work of the heart, and sometimes even loss of consciousness.  There is a violation in the motor and sensory spheres - paresis and paralysis, impaired sensitivity.  In this case, the muscles of the limbs are not affected, which allows us to speak of the reversibility of the condition.  Because of the nonspecificity of symptoms outside the attack, hysteria is often masked by other illnesses.  However, a seizure cannot be confused with anything else.  When exposed to any, even minimal, stress factor, the patient falls to the floor, cries, bends, tears his hair and clothes, simulating cramps and pain.  The attack never starts while sleeping or alone, and is necessarily preceded by vivid emotional reactions such as loud laughter or crying.  Unlike an epileptic seizure, patients fall gently, not traumatically, gently going down the wall.  When exposed to a strong stimulus (cry, cold, pain), the hysteria stops.

 If you experience similar symptoms, and even more so, attacks, you should immediately consult a psychiatrist.  In such cases, a comprehensive treatment is recommended, including drug correction of symptoms and psychotherapy.  In the treatment of paralysis, sedatives, vitamins and restorative drugs are used.  From the list of physiotherapeutic procedures, a soothing massage, acupuncture is recommended.  In psychotherapy, elements of therapeutic sleep, suggestion, hypnosis are used.  The prognosis for recovery and life is very favorable if treatment is started on time and the development of suicidal attempts, anorexia, or severe irreversible mental disorders is prevented.

Earth is whipping around quicker than it has in a half-century

 

Even time did not escape 2020 unscathed. 

The 28 fastest days on record (since 1960) all occurred in 2020, with Earth completing its revolutions around its axis milliseconds quicker than average. That's not particularly alarming — the planet's rotation varies slightly all the time, driven by variations in atmospheric pressure, winds, ocean currents and the movement of the core. But it is inconvenient for international timekeepers, who use ultra-accurate atomic clocks to meter out the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by which everyone sets their clocks. When astronomical time, set by the time it takes the Earth to make one full rotation, deviates from UTC by more than 0.4 seconds, UTC gets an adjustment.

Until now, these adjustments have consisted of adding a "leap second" to the year at the end of June or December, bringing astronomical time and atomic time back in line. These leap seconds were tacked on because the overall trend of Earth's rotation has been slowing since accurate satellite measurement began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since 1972, scientists have added leap seconds about every year-and-a-half, on average, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The last addition came in 2016, when on New Year's Eve at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, an extra "leap second" was added.

However, according to Time and Date, the recent acceleration in Earth's spin has scientists talking for the first time about a negative leap second. Instead of adding a second, they might need to subtract one. That's because the average length of a day is 86,400 seconds, but an astronomical day in 2021 will clock in 0.05 milliseconds shorter, on average. Over the course of the year, that will add up to a 19 millisecond lag in atomic time. 

"It's quite possible that a negative leap second will be needed if the Earth's rotation rate increases further, but it's too early to say if this is likely to happen," physicist Peter Whibberley of the National Physics Laboratory in the U.K., told The Telegraph. "There are also international discussions taking place about the future of leap seconds, and it's also possible that the need for a negative leap second might push the decision towards ending leap seconds for good."

The year 2020 was already faster than usual, astronomically speaking (cue sighs of relief). According to Time and Date, Earth broke the previous record for shortest astronomical day, set in 2005, 28 times. That year's shortest day, July 5, saw Earth complete a rotation 1.0516 milliseconds faster than 86,400 seconds. The shortest day in 2020 was July 19, when the planet completed one spin 1.4602 milliseconds faster than 86,400 seconds. 

According to the NIST, leap seconds have their pros and cons. They're useful for making sure that astronomical observations are synced with clock time, but they can be a hassle for some data-logging applications and telecommunications infrastructure. Some scientists at the International Telecommunication Union have suggested letting the gap between astronomical and atomic time widen until a "leap hour" is needed, which would minimize disruption to telecommunications. (Astronomers would have to make their own adjustments in the meantime.) 

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) in Paris, France, is responsible for determining whether adding or subtracting a leap second is necessary. Currently, the IERS shows no new leap seconds scheduled to be added, according to the service's Earth Orientation Center.

Defamation: What it is and How to Deal with It

Defamation is when someone tells one or more persons an untruth about you, and that untruth harms your reputation. Defamation is the general term, while slander and libel refer to particular types of defamation. Libel is a written defamation, and slander is verbal. There are three key factors to consider when deciding whether a defamatory statement should be taken to court.

1. The defamatory statement must be a lie.

Often, we confuse every negative comment about us with defamation. Unfortunately, not all negative statements are defamation. As Americans, we have a right to free speech that applies not just to statements about the government, but also about each other. That right of free speech is not without limit, though. When someone communicates, either in writing or verbally, a statement that is not true about you they step beyond the bounds of their right to free speech and may be subject to civil liability to you.

What about statements of opinion, though? After all, they are not exactly facts or necessarily untrue if it is the person's opinion, but they can be negative and hurtful. So on which side of the equation do opinions lie? Well, as it turns out, the answer is both. If the opinion is a legitimate one, then it is protected free speech. If the opinion is outrageous or designed solely to harm the reputation of the person the opinion is purportedly about, it can be defamation. Confusing, right? The only way to know for sure is to talk to a qualified, experienced attorney in your jurisdiction.

2. There must be actual harm.

So often, people who have been defamed are more angry than actually injured. For example, if your neighbor John starts telling everyone that you eat kittens, you might be hurt, but unless anyone actually believes him, you have no harm. Indeed, even if your wacky neighbor Agnes, the crazy cat lady, believes John and thinks that is why some of her cats have gone missing so she starts shooting you dirty looks as you walk by but takes no other action, you still probably have not really been injured. After all, how would you quantify your injury for a dirty look from the crazy cat lady? Did you lose business? Were you fired from your job? Did you have a nervous breakdown or a heart attack? Probably not. So in those instances you would not have suffered any harm and would not have a case.

But, what if John starts telling people you are a domestic abuser who beats his wife? What if he makes a website with your personal information on it right beside his allegations? What if it costs your company business, your boss decides to let you go, and you end up having so much stress from the untrue statements that you suffer a heart attack? Those are actual injuries that can be addressed and quantified in a lawsuit for slander or libel.

3. You need evidence.

A person can slander another person all day long, but unless those who witness the slander are willing to testify or the slanderous statements were recorded, it becomes a “he said/she said” situation. Obviously, things in writing are easier to preserve for trial but will not be entirely useful unless there is information regarding who wrote the statement. When possible, video and audio recordings of the person making the statements, screen shots of the person's social networking site displaying the statements, and signed letters on the person's letterhead are solid options for evidence, so record them and keep them someplace safe.

So, now that we know what defamation is and what you will need for trial, how do you deal with the consequences? You need an action plan and access to some useful resources:

1. Calm down.

Before running off and taking action in anger, walk away from the situation for an hour or two (or better yet, a day or two) and make sure you are calm before continuing. Remember, lawsuits can get expensive, and the cool off time will allow you to reflect on what occurred and whether you actually have a case.

2. Call a lawyer.

Pull together all of the evidence you can find together, including names of witnesses and copies of any written statements. Then, find a lawyer who handles defamation, libel, and slander cases. Personal injury attorneys are often likely to do some of this work, or those who specialize in other forms of civil litigation. Your lawyer will likely want to write a letter to the defamer and insist that the slander/libel cease and desist. Your attorney will want to specify that the source of statements is known, how it is known, that the defamer knew that the statements were lies before saying or posting them, and that the source has a very small window of time (usually only a day to a week) to retract the statements and, if in writing, replace it with a statement that the removed statements were false. An apology may be a part of the retraction, as well, but do not expect much. Of course, if the defamer refuses to comply, the attorney can take legal action on your behalf, inform the website administrators of what has occurred, and take other steps to start rectifying the situation from a legal standpoint.

3. Consult a reputation management expert.

In some instances you will need a way to get defamatory content off the internet or, at the very least, buried under so much positive news about you that only the most intrepid souls will dig deep enough to find it. To do that, you may need the assistance of a reputation management expert. There are a number of services available online that specialize in creating new content about you, making take down requests to sites posting negative content, and taking other steps to control your online reputation. This may be overkill in some instances, but if the defamatory comments are still on the internet and are preventing you from getting a job, a new client, a significant other, or whatever the situation is, then a reputation management expert may be the way to go. They also may be able to interface with your attorney, documenting all of the different instances of defamatory material they find for later use at trial.
