Defamation: What it is and How to Deal with It

Defamation is when someone tells one or more persons an untruth about you, and that untruth harms your reputation. Defamation is the general term, while slander and libel refer to particular types of defamation. Libel is a written defamation, and slander is verbal. There are three key factors to consider when deciding whether a defamatory statement should be taken to court.

1. The defamatory statement must be a lie.

Often, we confuse every negative comment about us with defamation. Unfortunately, not all negative statements are defamation. As Americans, we have a right to free speech that applies not just to statements about the government, but also about each other. That right of free speech is not without limit, though. When someone communicates, either in writing or verbally, a statement that is not true about you they step beyond the bounds of their right to free speech and may be subject to civil liability to you.

What about statements of opinion, though? After all, they are not exactly facts or necessarily untrue if it is the person's opinion, but they can be negative and hurtful. So on which side of the equation do opinions lie? Well, as it turns out, the answer is both. If the opinion is a legitimate one, then it is protected free speech. If the opinion is outrageous or designed solely to harm the reputation of the person the opinion is purportedly about, it can be defamation. Confusing, right? The only way to know for sure is to talk to a qualified, experienced attorney in your jurisdiction.

2. There must be actual harm.

So often, people who have been defamed are more angry than actually injured. For example, if your neighbor John starts telling everyone that you eat kittens, you might be hurt, but unless anyone actually believes him, you have no harm. Indeed, even if your wacky neighbor Agnes, the crazy cat lady, believes John and thinks that is why some of her cats have gone missing so she starts shooting you dirty looks as you walk by but takes no other action, you still probably have not really been injured. After all, how would you quantify your injury for a dirty look from the crazy cat lady? Did you lose business? Were you fired from your job? Did you have a nervous breakdown or a heart attack? Probably not. So in those instances you would not have suffered any harm and would not have a case.

But, what if John starts telling people you are a domestic abuser who beats his wife? What if he makes a website with your personal information on it right beside his allegations? What if it costs your company business, your boss decides to let you go, and you end up having so much stress from the untrue statements that you suffer a heart attack? Those are actual injuries that can be addressed and quantified in a lawsuit for slander or libel.

3. You need evidence.

A person can slander another person all day long, but unless those who witness the slander are willing to testify or the slanderous statements were recorded, it becomes a “he said/she said” situation. Obviously, things in writing are easier to preserve for trial but will not be entirely useful unless there is information regarding who wrote the statement. When possible, video and audio recordings of the person making the statements, screen shots of the person's social networking site displaying the statements, and signed letters on the person's letterhead are solid options for evidence, so record them and keep them someplace safe.

So, now that we know what defamation is and what you will need for trial, how do you deal with the consequences? You need an action plan and access to some useful resources:

1. Calm down.

Before running off and taking action in anger, walk away from the situation for an hour or two (or better yet, a day or two) and make sure you are calm before continuing. Remember, lawsuits can get expensive, and the cool off time will allow you to reflect on what occurred and whether you actually have a case.

2. Call a lawyer.

Pull together all of the evidence you can find together, including names of witnesses and copies of any written statements. Then, find a lawyer who handles defamation, libel, and slander cases. Personal injury attorneys are often likely to do some of this work, or those who specialize in other forms of civil litigation. Your lawyer will likely want to write a letter to the defamer and insist that the slander/libel cease and desist. Your attorney will want to specify that the source of statements is known, how it is known, that the defamer knew that the statements were lies before saying or posting them, and that the source has a very small window of time (usually only a day to a week) to retract the statements and, if in writing, replace it with a statement that the removed statements were false. An apology may be a part of the retraction, as well, but do not expect much. Of course, if the defamer refuses to comply, the attorney can take legal action on your behalf, inform the website administrators of what has occurred, and take other steps to start rectifying the situation from a legal standpoint.

3. Consult a reputation management expert.

In some instances you will need a way to get defamatory content off the internet or, at the very least, buried under so much positive news about you that only the most intrepid souls will dig deep enough to find it. To do that, you may need the assistance of a reputation management expert. There are a number of services available online that specialize in creating new content about you, making take down requests to sites posting negative content, and taking other steps to control your online reputation. This may be overkill in some instances, but if the defamatory comments are still on the internet and are preventing you from getting a job, a new client, a significant other, or whatever the situation is, then a reputation management expert may be the way to go. They also may be able to interface with your attorney, documenting all of the different instances of defamatory material they find for later use at trial.

IRS: Up to 9 million people need to claim federal stimulus checks

The IRS plans to notify 9 million Americans who may be eligible for a government stimulus check but who have yet to claim the relief payment.

That mostly pertains to people who typically don't file a federal income tax return, the agency said Tuesday. They will have until October 15 to register for IRS.gov's non-filer tool to receive their payments by year-end. According to the IRS, about 160 million taxpayers have received the payments, which were designed to offset the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The stimulus checks targeted middle- and low-income households by providing $1,200 for single taxpayers, $2,400 for married couples and $500 per child under 17 years old. To deliver the checks as quickly as possible, the IRS relied on taxpayers' most recent tax returns, which included either banking details for direct deposit or home addresses for paper checks.

But there are millions of Americans who don't file taxes, such as some senior citizens and low-income households, which has slowed delivery of the stimulus checks to these groups.

"We are taking this extra step to help Americans who may not know they could be eligible for this payment or don't know how to register for one," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a statement. "People who aren't required to file a tax return can quickly register on IRS.gov and still get their money this year."

The IRS says it will begin mailing the letters on September 24, which will inform recipients that they could be eligible for a payment if they meet certain criteria, such as if they are a citizen or a resident alien and have a valid Social Security number. The IRS said that 7 million people have already registered through the Non-Filers tool to receive a check.

No guarantee

By registering at the IRS' site, people can give their bank account information to the tax agency, which will then wire the money by year-end. Those who don't provide bank account information will receive a check in the mail.

However, if eligible individuals fail to register by October 15 and haven't yet received a check, they will have to file a federal income tax return in order to claim a stimulus check, the IRS said. In some cases, that might mean waiting to file a return in early 2021 for the current 2020 tax year.

The IRS also cautions that receiving a letter about registering by October 15 isn't a guarantee that someone is eligible to get a stimulus check. Some people are excluded from the payments, such immigrants without a Green Card and those who are incarcerated.

High-income people are also excluded, with single earners over $99,000 and married couples earning more than $198,000 ineligible for payment.

Congressional lawmakers remain at odds over whether to authorize funding for another round of stimulus payments. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that the Senate would vote on a "targeted" coronavirus relief package this week, but the legislation does not provide money for a stimulus check.

September 8 2020 Saudi Arabia Just Crushed U.S. Crude Oil Prices Again

The crude oil recovery has hit its first big speed bump.

The surge in COVID-19 cases in many parts of the world, the end of a weak peak-summer demand season in the Northern Hemisphere, and the cessation of record crude purchases by Chinese refiners in the second quarter have created a chain of events that has crude oil futures cratering on Sept. 8. At this writing, Brent crude is down 4.5% to $40.13 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures are down a brutal 7% to $37.02 per barrel.

Today's massive sell-off comes after news over the weekend that Saudi Arabia was cutting crude prices for October shipments to both Asian and U.S. refining customers. This marks the first time since early in 2020 that the petro state has lowered prices for crude shipments to the U.S., putting its selling price to Asia back below the country's target benchmark as Chinese shipments weaken after months of stockpiling.

Demand recovery stalled

Today's drop in oil prices continues a week of selling by oil traders, following a near-daily string of concerning news. Last week's U.S. Energy Information Administration weekly petroleum report kicked off the bad news, with a hint at optimism on 9.4 million barrels in inventory drawdowns. But the reality of continued weakness in consumption that was still double-digits below prior-year levels started crude prices tumbling lower.

The news got progressively less positive as the holiday weekend approached. Friday's big crude sell-off (which looks pretty minor compared with today's brutal crash) came on word that Chinese refiners, which soaked up massive amounts of crude during the second quarter's collapse, were buying much smaller amounts of crude and that tankers in Chinese ports were being forced to wait for weeks to off-load.

Top U.S. independent oil producers are seeing their stocks take a pummeling, with shares of Apache Corp (NASDAQ:APA)Murphy Oil (NYSE:MUR)Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ:FANG), and Continental Resources (NYSE:CLR) all down by double digits over the past week.

Saudi Arabia fighting for every barrel of market share

In Asia, the clear driver is China's pivot away from massive stockpiling to working through that excess inventory. Saudi Arabia is taking steps to command as much market share in the region as it can, discounting its crude.

In the U.S. the biggest driver is the end of the peak summer-driving season, which fell well short of expectations. Gasoline consumption has risen modestly from month to month since June but remained well below prior-year levels. Historical refiner data shows both the seasonality of demand and how far below typical levels the demand remains:

Saudi Arabia's U.S. strategy seems to be changing as well. Earlier this year, the country flooded global markets with oil when it and Russia engaged in a battle for global oil dominance. In April, Saudi Arabia shipped the most oil to the U.S. it has sent in a single month since early 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic crushed global demand and forced the two adversaries to partner on record production cuts.

Those cuts saw the country send some of the lowest amounts of crude it has shipped in years in the second quarter. But with the seasonal drop in American oil consumption kicking in with the end of summer, it appears Saudi Arabia is using its massive pricing power to take back share.

The biggest losers in the next phase of the crude oil battle

The U.S. oil industry has already gone through a brutal year, and the pain was set to continue for producers and the companies producers hire to do the work in the oil fields. Even prior to the past week's 14% decline in crude prices, many independent oil producers were dealing with prices that didn't cover their operating expenses. As a result, we have already seen dozens of private and public oil companies go bankrupt.

Saudi Arabia's move to get aggressive in the U.S. could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for the next round of on-the-edge U.S. oil stocks. Companies like Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), for instance, had been making progress on mountains of debt with oil in the $40s. But with Saudi Arabia making a move to take back share, getting a balance sheet in order without having to go through bankruptcy just got much, much more difficult.

Oxy and many of its peers could still come through the 2020 downturn without going through bankruptcy. But so long as global oil demand remains weak, Saudi Arabia will remain a massive threat to oil prices. The country, which controls the world's biggest, cheapest reserves, will use this advantage as a weapon to fight for market share. There's not an oil producer in the world that can beat Saudi Arabia on prices.

Car jerks? Torque converter? -How to reset, program Mercedes-Benz transm...

Folks please READ!!! Very important.
I hope you have a same issue and can fix it like so, if not of course other service needed, but I was told so many different things I even blame on dealer that they did something with my transmission, because I bend fingers in dealer store))) I have told from variety technicians that this could be bad transmission fluid, suggest bad transmission mounts, where I changed 2 years ago engine mounts, I have told that bearing on middle right front axle could went out, or axle it self.
Then I found video - (
https://bit.ly/2WUPa2x TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER NOISE VIBRATION HARD SHIFTING FIX | SHUTTER FIX ) where they adding small cup of special liquid to transmission through the measuring stick , of course it was on other mercedes. Then I start researching what can get involved and I found video for other model where is someone resetting transmission.
Procedure Reset Transmission Adaptive Learning DIY
1. Turn the key to position 2. You should see all the dash lights come on. Do NOT start the car. Position II: You should hear two clicks and all your dash lights should turn on. Do not start the engine.
2. Press the gas pedal all the way. By pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor, you will activate the kick down switch. Keep the gas pedal pressed all the way to down.
3. Wait. Continue to keep the gas pedal pressed for at least 30 seconds.
4. Turn key to OFF, position 0. Don’t remove the key. Some models may need the key to be removed.
Release the gas pedal
5. Release gas pedal
6. Wait 2 minutes. During this process, key is left in the ignition in the OFF position
7. Start the car and drive.
Once you perform this procedure the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and Transmission Control Unit (TCU) will work together to learn how you drive by monitoring your driving pattern. After you follow this programing method of the TCU / ECU drive the car for 15 min. Do not race the car, unless that’s how you plan on driving all the time. You should have a transmission that shifts smooth and normal. You may feel like you have a new transmission!

Video: How to reset, program Mercedes-Benz transmission.

Symptoms of Torque Converter Problems should be like this:
Slipping. A torque converter can slip out of gear or delay a shift its fin or bearing is damaged. ...
Overheating. ...
Contaminated Transmission Fluid. ...
Shuddering. ...
Increased Stall Speed. ...
Unusual Sounds.
If Your torque converter can make a variety of noises when it goes bad. You may first notice a whine, similar to a power-steering pump that is low on fluid. The stator within the assembly uses an overrun mechanism with a series of clutches that, when bad, can cause a rattling noise.
but if it is just a jiggling try this fix first!

How often should you perform this reset?
Even though the car is supposed to relearn and adapt to your driving style and habits automatically, that works better in theory than in practice. Engineers at Mercedes-Benz had a good idea in mind. We would recommend that you perform this once a month, but honestly it’s all up to you.

This procedure should help if your transmission shifts randomly or jerks. If transmission changes gears when not expected. If you are experiencing random downshifts or upshifts.

Does the dealer perform this procedure?
Yes, but using a different method. This procedure can also be performed by Mercedes-Benz dealer using Xentry DAS Diagnostic Scanner. This reset can be found under Control Units – Drive- Transmission – Control Unit Adaptations or Adaptation – Display and reset of adaptation data – Resetting of adaptation data

This should work on E, CLK CLS CLA ML GLK S SLK C models, Crossfire, basically any Mercedes Benz years:

1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

Did this work for you?

Scientists at Stanford University have discovered a surprising shift in the Arctic Ocean.

A 'regime shift' is happening in the Arctic Ocean, scientists say

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain

Exploding blooms of phytoplankton, the tiny algae at the base of a food web topped by whales and polar bears, have drastically altered the Arctic's ability to transform atmospheric carbon into living matter. Over the past decade, the surge has replaced sea ice loss as the biggest driver of changes in uptake of carbon dioxide by phytoplankton.

The research appears July 10 in Science. Senior author Kevin Arrigo, a professor in Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (Stanford Earth), said the growing influence of phytoplankton biomass may represent a "significant regime shift" for the Arctic, a region that is warming faster than anywhere else on Earth.

The study centers on net primary production (NPP), a measure of how quickly plants and algae convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into sugars that other creatures can eat. "The rates are really important in terms of how much food there is for the rest of the ecosystem," Arrigo said. "It's also important because this is one of the main ways that CO2 is pulled out of the atmosphere and into the ocean."

A thickening soup

Arrigo and colleagues found that NPP in the Arctic increased 57 percent between 1998 and 2018. That's an unprecedented jump in productivity for an entire ocean basin. More surprising is the discovery that while NPP increases were initially linked to retreating sea ice, productivity continued to climb even after melting slowed down around 2009. "The increase in NPP over the past decade is due almost exclusively to a recent increase in phytoplankton biomass," Arrigo said.

Put another way, these microscopic algae were once metabolizing more carbon across the Arctic simply because they were gaining more open water over longer growing seasons, thanks to climate-driven changes in ice cover. Now, they are growing more concentrated, like a thickening algae soup.

"In a given volume of water, more phytoplankton were able to grow each year," said lead study author Kate Lewis, who worked on the research as a Ph.D. student in Stanford's Department of Earth System Science. "This is the first time this has been reported in the Arctic Ocean."

New food supplies

Phytoplankton require light and nutrients to grow. But the availability and intermingling of these ingredients throughout the water column depend on complex factors. As a result, although Arctic researchers have observed phytoplankton blooms going into overdrive in recent decades, they have debated how long the boom might last and how high it may climb.

By assembling a massive new collection of ocean color measurements for the Arctic Ocean and building new algorithms to estimate phytoplankton concentrations from them, the Stanford team uncovered evidence that continued increases in production may no longer be as limited by scarce nutrients as once suspected. "It's still early days, but it looks like now there is a shift to greater nutrient supply," said Arrigo, the Donald and Donald M. Steel Professor in Earth Sciences.

The researchers hypothesize that a new influx of nutrients is flowing in from other oceans and sweeping up from the Arctic's depths. "We knew the Arctic had increased production in the last few years, but it seemed possible the system was just recycling the same store of nutrients," Lewis said. "Our study shows that's not the case. Phytoplankton are absorbing more carbon year after year as new nutrients come into this ocean. That was unexpected, and it has big ecological impacts."

Decoding the Arctic

The researchers were able to extract these insights from measures of the green plant pigment chlorophyll taken by satellite sensors and research cruises. But because of the unusual interplay of light, color and life in the Arctic, the work required new algorithms. "The Arctic Ocean is the most difficult place in the world to do satellite remote sensing," Arrigo explained. "Algorithms that work everywhere else in the world—that look at the color of the ocean to judge how much phytoplankton are there—do not work in the Arctic at all."

The difficulty stems in part from a huge volume of incoming tea-colored river water, which carries dissolved organic matter that remote sensors mistake for chlorophyll. Additional complexity comes from the unusual ways in which phytoplankton have adapted to the Arctic's extremely low light. "When you use global satellite remote sensing algorithms in the Arctic Ocean, you end up with serious errors in your estimates," said Lewis.

Yet these remote-sensing data are essential for understanding long-term trends across an ocean basin in one of the world's most extreme environments, where a single direct measurement of NPP may require 24 hours of round-the-clock work by a team of scientists aboard an icebreaker, Lewis said. She painstakingly curated sets of ocean color and NPP measurements, then used the compiled database to build algorithms tuned to the Arctic's unique conditions. Both the database and the algorithms are now available for public use.

The work helps to illuminate how climate change will shape the Arctic Ocean's future productivity, food supply and capacity to absorb carbon. "There's going to be winners and losers," Arrigo said. "A more productive Arctic means more food for lots of animals. But many animals that have adapted to live in a polar environment are finding life more difficult as the ice retreats."

Phytoplankton growth may also peak out of sync with the rest of the food web because ice is melting earlier in the year. Add to that the likelihood of more shipping traffic as Arctic waters open up, and the fact that the Arctic is simply too small to take much of a bite out of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. "It's taking in a lot more carbon than it used to take in," Arrigo said, "but it's not something we're going to be able to rely on to help us out of our climate problem."

Why People Become Reclusive and Like It

Analyzing why people do the things they do and how those things affect others is one of my favorite pastimes. I enjoy finding solutions.

There are many reasons why someone would want to be reclusive. Sometimes it's a natural reaction to life events.

Why Do People Become Reclusive?
What causes a person to voluntarily remove themselves from society and live a life of solitude? For some, it may be a symptom of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They witnessed or became a victim of some horrific act, or something horrible happened to somebody they loved, and they had no control over it.

In many cases, people become reclusive after somebody within or outside the home repeatedly infringes upon their privacy or threatens them in some way. The act or acts play over and over again in their head, causing them grief, anxiety, guilt, and/or fear. These emotions overwhelm them, leaving little or no room for comfort, peace, or joy. They may also develop agoraphobia, a fear of going outside.

Reclusive for Privacy and Comfort
For some, being alone feels more comfortable than being around other people. Some of them enjoy entertaining their own thoughts and hobbies without the obligation to contribute to conversations or happenings of others. Their privacy may be more important to them than any need to share the details of their lives. They have spent much of their lives catering to the needs of others, and they feel a need to step away from all that and just relax and enjoy a peaceful existence.

In some cases, the prospect of sharing stories of their life tenses them up, and they want to protect their privacy. Whenever they share private information with others, they often regret it. Many of these people may become reclusive because they feel inadequate. They can't imagine why anyone would find anything they have to say interesting. The whole idea of being around other people who ask questions of them causes them more anxiety than joy. Staying inside their own home makes life easier for them.

Reclusive Due to Feelings of Inadequacy
Some people know that nothing they say or do will change the past. Therefore, they mistakenly believe that sharing their feelings about the past serves no purpose. Other people know that what they have to say will make a difference. They want to share it with the world. However, they either fear that speaking out will make them more vulnerable or that they are the ones who repeatedly tugged on their mom or dad's leg as a child only to hear, "Not now; I'm busy." They were the ones who knew the answer in class, frantically waved their arm back and forth, yelling, "Pick me; pick me," only to hear another person's name called out.

Parents and teachers are busy people and sometimes, they have to give someone else their attention. However, the child internalizes this as a belief that their voice lacks importance. Throughout their lives, people unknowingly speak over them because they also have something they want to be heard. However, that is little comfort to the people who have questions, answers, or statements reeling around in their brains with nowhere to go.

Lack of Money
Other people stay inside because they can't afford to do anything that interests them outside the home. In the beginning, their friends invite them to places, but they have to decline because they don't have the funds. When this occurs time and time again, most friends figure they already know the person will not join them; therefore, they stop asking.

The reclusive person becomes more accustomed to doing things alone in their own surroundings. The longer some of them spend away from other people, the more uncomfortable they feel when they have to be around them. However, some of these people maintain friendships and feel perfectly at ease when they visit.

Reclusive for Safety Concerns
The need to feel safe in a world where there's no guarantee of security against foreign or domestic terrorists or violent criminals such as stalkers or muggers causes some people to choose a life of seclusion. Ironically, the good people who would never bring harm to another human being become prisoners in their own homes while the people who do bad things or threaten to hurt or kill another person or people walk around freely. Unfortunately, laws designed to protect people from others who threaten them rarely incarcerate the perpetrator for any significant amount of time.

In fact, in most cases, the laws provide more protection for the criminal than they do for the victim. Many victims would venture outside more if the perpetrator was locked up. If the perpetrator was locked up in a state far away and not allowed to ever leave that state, victims of that perpetrator might be able to function outside the home.

The Importance of Listening to Reclusive People
Whether the desire to be reclusive stems from comfort or fear, it's important to weigh the risks and benefits of getting out in the world or staying in and to analyze which choice, if any, could be looked back on with the least amount of regret. Some reclusive people simply need somebody to help them see the beauty of who they are. They need somebody to hear their voice.

Whether they yell at the top of their lungs from a podium or they sit alone in their home writing onto a notepad or typing into a computer, what they have to say matters to somebody somewhere. All people have a story. Their experiences continually change who they are and who they are destined to become. Every page of their lives has the substance to teach, heal, or entertain. A mere chapter of their story could, potentially, change a life, or, maybe even, make the world a better place to live in.

Reclusive Writers and Artists
Writers, sometimes, become reclusive because sharing their knowledge or wisdom becomes an obsession. A friend stops by to ask if they want to go out somewhere and they shew them away; saying, "I can't go right now. I'm in the middle of an important article," or, their phone rings and they quickly stuff it under their pillow. Their life and everybody in it become distractions.

Their ultimate goal of getting their point across releases them from feelings of insignificance and worthlessness. They imagine that what they've shared on paper or screen makes something easier for someone to understand, or helps somebody feel better, or makes another person smile or laugh and they like it. They like working on pieces that entertain their audience. Leaving their mark on the world trumps experiencing more of it. They like the idea that things may be better for future generations because of something they wrote about. They like spending all their time working on making the people of the world more aware, healthier, or happier. They like being a recluse.

The Misconception About Reclusive People
People choose or feel forced into reclusiveness for other reasons as well. A common misconception is that they sit around in a catatonic state and do nothing or that they are all feeling sad or lonely. Some people may be experiencing a deep depression. It's possible that they slipped into the depression over a long period of time, and they don't realize that their desire to be alone is a result of that.

Therapy may help them make changes to feel better. However, many people who choose a reclusive lifestyle live productive lives doing exactly what they want to do. They feel happy and content. Many of them run businesses from their homes. Some may concentrate their time on being more relaxed and less productive, but if they are happy and content with where they're at, they are in a better place than many people who are rarely alone yet feel lonely often.

Some reclusive people may seek therapy because they want to become more social beings, but they don't know how to feel safe or more comfortable in the process. Therapy may help people who want to mingle more with others or feel safer outdoors. Each individual has the right to choose and options to change if they desire to do so.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Question:My friend has been through a lot, and she's extremely reclusive. She’s twenty-one-years-old and gorgeous. She has boys chasing her all the time, but she never drinks and never goes out to the club or parties. I’m her only friend. She doesn’t like to hang out. She always wants to be at home. She never wants to talk. She has no motivation for anything. What's wrong with her?
Answer:
You say that she's been through a lot. Has she talked to you about those things? She may not realize how much a therapist could help her work through her thoughts or social awkwardness if those are things keeping her isolated. It's great that she has a friend like you who is concerned for her and trying to help her enjoy life. Could it be that she's just not into the bar scene? Maybe suggest going bowling or to the movies or ask her what she would enjoy doing outside of her home.

Question:Privacy and comfort appeal to me as contributing reasons for a more reclusive existence. Is a reclusive lifestyle an all or nothing proposition? I could see myself being happy for extended periods as a recluse but wanting to be around others on occasion even if I was not interacting directly with them, e.g., going to town to do the food shopping.
Answer:
I think it's healthy for people who choose to be reclusive to at the very least get out among other people occasionally and have positive interactions with other people even if virtually at least once a week. Many reclusive business people who either consider themselves recluses or have been labeled by others as such still interact with people, often daily, to conduct the business they do. Sometimes even people who enjoy being alone become depressed or anxious if they go too long without human contact so it helps to either get out or have somebody over once in a while or when negative feelings creep up.

Question:How do I help my twenty-three-year-old daughter if she is becoming a recluse?
Answer:
Therapy might help, but it's sometimes difficult to convince somebody to talk to a therapist. From one parent to another, what I would do in a similar situation is look for something outside the home that my daughter and I could do together once a week. I'd let her know that I really want to spend time doing fun or exciting things with her. I'd start with something fun like a trip to an amusement park or a dance class (if she likes dancing) (something that both of us have to put our phones away for). For ongoing weekly outings, maybe we could find a cause to work on together (like becoming adult literacy tutors or volunteering at a children's hospital) or maybe set up a bunco club with people of both our age groups, go to the show every Sunday, or take a culinary class together. I might see if my sister and niece want to join us on some of these outings to give her someone her own age to talk to.

Question:My partner has become a self-loathing recluse over the last five years. He won't answer calls, texts or the door for even his family, who now blame me. How can I help him?
Answer:
Talk to him to let him know that you care about him and you want to do what you can to help. Let him know you will listen with an open heart and you would like to be part of a plan to bring him happiness. Suggest seeing a therapist who might be able to get to the root of what's wrong and how to combat it. Invite him to gradually participate in outdoor activities with yourself at first and then maybe another couple and eventually maybe family members. Start with short periods of time close to home such as a two-hour barbeque in the backyard, and if that works well maybe have another one the following week and perhaps make a date to travel a little further with another couple the week after that.

Question:I have Prolonged Duration Traumatic Disorder, and I am constantly being let down by the NHS who wrote today that they are withdrawing support because I do not trust them. What do I do?
Answer:
You should talk to your general practitioner or another medical professional to find out what your next step should be. They may steer you in the direction you need to go with medical personnel and also ask if they know of other resources that may help you along the way.

Recently there has been much attention paid to concussions, particularly related to sports concussions, and the responsibilities of coaches and team management to effectively prevent and treat concussions for their athletes.
While sports concussions are very prevalent, people sustain concussions from many other activities as well. These may include motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence, and work related injuries, among other causes. Whatever the cause of a concussion, proper treatment for a concussion is extremely important for a functional recovery.
Unfortunately some concussions go undiagnosed and people don’t even realize that they have suffered a concussion until weeks, months, or even years later, and after much suffering.
In order to sustain a concussion, you do not necessarily need to sustain a blow to the head, or get “knocked out”. A quick jolt to the body or head can also cause a concussion.
Symptoms of a concussion may include headaches, drowsiness, feeling as though you are in a fog, difficulty remembering short term or even long term information, difficulty maintaining attention (especially when there is background noise), dizziness or balance issues, and in some cases even short term amnesia.
Speech language pathologists are an essential part of the team in many concussion cases. Speech language pathologists or speech therapists are not only specialists in speech, language, swallowing, and voice, but we are also cognitive specialists.
If you have suffered a concussion, or think that you have suffered a concussion, and are suffering with one or more of the following symptoms listed below, you should consult with your physician and find out about working with a speech therapist who specializes in cognitive rehabilitation. Possible symptoms may include:
  • Headaches brought on by periods of prolonged or intensive concentration.
  • Difficulty remembering short term or long term information.
  • Difficulty listening or paying attention, especially in background noise.
  • Difficulty maintaining cognitive endurance for long (or even short) periods of time.
  • Feeling like your brain is tired or unable to think after periods of intense concentration.  (This is referred to as cognitive fatigue).
  • Difficulty thinking quickly and efficiently.
  • Difficulty organizing, planning, and effectively implementing plans.
Speech therapists who specialize in cognitive rehabilitation can work with you to effectively identify areas of cognitive difficulty and put in place a plan of treatment so you can heal.
Speech therapy can help you recover from your symptoms as much as possible and help you to learn to effectively compensate when you are having difficulty. Many patients have expressed to me how helpful speech therapy has been for their recovery from the devastating effects of concussion.
